 Activated carbonfilters, also known as activated charcoal filters, are a type of filter thatuse activated carbon to remove impurities from air or water. Activated carbon is a form ofcarbon that has been processed to have small, low volume pores that increasethe surface area available for absorption or chemical reactions. This makes ithighly porous and able to trap impurities through  a process called absorption.

They arealso used in a variety of industrial and commercial applications, includingtreatment of waste water and air pollution control. Activated carbon filterstypically have a finite life span and need to be replaced periodically,depending on the number of impurities they are removing and the frequency ofuse. The replacement time can vary from a few months to a few years. 

Activated carbonfilters can be very effective in removing impurities, but they do not removeall types of contaminants. For example, they will not remove bacteria, viruses,or heavy metals. It is important to choose the right type of activated carbonfilter for your specific needs and use it in conjunction with other filtrationmethods for best results.
